POETRY: 'Tik Tok' by Jazelle Handoush

Tik Tok
by Jazelle Handoush

365 days; the back and forth of
night and light, fight for
supremacy between sun and moon.
The literal revolution, spin and spiral,
As we come full circle in the turn of time.

Time.

Nonexistent until mentally measured.
Until we look back at the part of
Our past, most memorable, life threatening
Changes. Or our forward future, eventually
within reach yet for now beyond bounds.
We too often depend on the tick and
Tock of seconds, minutes, hours.
Our focus should be present.

The now.
Right here.

What do you hear, see, smell. What
Lies in your palm at this exact moment?
Memorize. In this moment, memorize.
For in the future, you’ll recall this past.
Perhaps I can change something in these
Minutes, as a butterfly creates disaster
Miles away. No, I don’t wish to create
Disaster, but perhaps something mind and moment
Altering. Don’t forget, I pray. For it seems
My time has lapsed.

Time.

Tik tok.
